School & Juvenile Programs
D.A.R.E. is a community-based program focusing on educating children and young people on the dangers of using drugs and engaging in violence. D.A.R.E. has origins in the inter-city of Los Angeles, California, and is now an international program. There are over 40,000 D.A.R.E. officers in schools all over the world helping to educate young people. This is an educational resource that creates a partnership between police officers, teachers, parents, and students.
School Resource Officer Program
The School Resource Officer (SRO) Program is a collaborative effort with the Field Local Schools District. The Brimfield Police Department presently has one Officer assigned as a School Resource Officer, Officer Robert Putnam. The SRO is primarily assigned to Field High School but will spend time throughout the schools.
The School Resource Officer Program has two main components. The first is designed to enhance the relationship between the school district, its students, teachers/administrators, and the Brimfield Police Department. The daily communication between police and school officials prevents many problems and mitigates existing problems for both the school and the police. The second component is to provide training and instruction in the school as needed, as well as informal counseling to students, staff, and parents.
Cookies & Milk with a Cop
Brimfield Police Officers help to promote reading to the children who attend the elementary school, and our officers bring chocolate chip cookies with them as we read to the classes. This program helps young children to become acquainted with Police Officers in general and emphasizes the importance of reading.
Shop with a Cop
This program is a very special event for children in our community. Every year in December, police officers, staff and volunteers take children to Wal-Mart for a Christmas shopping spree. Children purchase items for themselves and gifts for their family at our Brimfield Walmart. The children are also treated to breakfast at our Brimfield Applebees Restaurant. In 2023, our department was able to invite 45 kids to participate. Please contact Rachelle Stacel at the police department at 330-673-7716 for more information or if you would like to help.
Safety School Program
This program is designed for children entering kindergarten in the Field Local School District. Police Officers, Firefighters & volunteers teach children safety lessons about street, bike, car, and bus safety, 911 use, escaping fires, stranger danger, animal safety, and more. The serious safety subject matter is taught through songs, games, and crafts and by riding pedal-powered vehicles through mock streets. At the conclusion of the week's activities, parents and family members are invited to attend a graduation ceremony. The children give a performance and are recognized for their accomplishments. Refreshments are served following the ceremony. Our program takes place at the Victory Baptist Temple on State Route 43 in Brimfield in August.
